Eugene ChouQ&A

What’s the most fun thing you’ve done recently?

An impromptu weekend trip to New York for food, sightseeing, and Broadway. It was a really nice change of pace from the usual research grind.

Do you have any hidden talents or special skills?

I'm not sure how hidden it is, but I still regularly play piano. Classical stuff mostly (Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Liszt, ...), but I do enjoy playing some jazz on occasion. I also transcribe music that I enjoy when I can find time.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

I'm not sure if I want it to be a permanent career, but I've always been fascinated by luthiers. I just think it'd be super cool to learn the trade and craft a violin or something. Realistically speaking though, I'd just like a stable (and ideally ethical) job that pays me well enough so I can do the things I enjoy doing.

What is your research about?

My research is about efficient secure data deletion. There has been a lot of legislation lately around data autonomy and data privacy, both of which essentially say that you, as a user of some data storage service, have a right to request that your data be deleted. My research is to grant systems the capability to securely delete user data when requested, and to do this efficiently (e.g., not have to wait months for something to be securely deleted).

What do you hope to do when you graduate (and when)?

I'm hoping to take a long-ish break before starting a job somewhere. I'd love to spend more time on music, and more time entertaining my outdoor hobbies like hiking and climbing. Hopefully I can graduate sometime Spring 2025, but we'll see what happens.
